After a major medical emergency, a person experiences a certain kind of quiet. For Judy Finnigan, the silence that followed a ruptured stomach ulcer in 2018 appears to have produced something unexpected: a complete rethinking of how she moved, ate, and took care of herself. On a bright Thursday in North London, she was seen getting out of a cream VW Beetle convertible with her husband Richard Madeley on their way to lunch. She looked thinner than many had seen her in years. She is 76 years old. She was described as nearly unrecognizable by the tabloids. Although the word is overused, it wasn’t totally incorrect in this instance.

Before the change, there was a genuine health scare. Finnigan had been taking ibuprofen for a knee injury, but she later acknowledged that she was taking the medication carelessly, as many people do. What came next was a stomach ulcer that burst and, according to her own account, brought her dangerously close to death. She talked about how the ambulance crew’s quick response and emergency care at London’s Royal Free Hospital, where she needed two significant blood transfusions, helped her survive. She expressed the kind of sentiment that usually accompanies a sincere examination of one’s habits, saying that she hoped to never encounter anything similar again.

Her daughter Chloe Madeley, who has established a successful career as a personal trainer and fitness writer, assisted her in managing the subsequent weight loss. The results of Chloe’s structured program, which focused on cutting calories through smaller, more frequent meals and regular exercise, were steady, if not dramatic. Two stones are gone. Chloe has talked about the dietary change almost more than the exercise aspect, pointing out on Loose Women that her mother’s tastes actually shifted from the meat-and-potatoes staples she had been eating for decades to sushi, raw fish, and multigrain salads. Apparently, some of this had begun earlier. Judy had been introduced to Japanese cuisine during a trip to Australia with Richard years earlier, and the habit took hold in a way that no one had quite expected. Before anyone had mentioned a diet, Chloe remembered her mother’s clothes getting noticeably baggy.

The fact that the biggest dietary change occurred organically rather than through professional engineering is intriguing. Chloe has been open about this, stating that she wasn’t ultimately responsible for the change, at least not initially. She proposed that appetites change with age, which is a fairly straightforward observation that is obscured by calorie tracking and structured programs. Judy gained weight after discovering food she liked that was also lighter, leaner, and more varied than what she had previously consumed. After the ulcer, when health became more important than appearance, the official program was implemented.

The Judy Finnigan story seems to deviate slightly from the typical celebrity weight loss template when viewed from a distance. It wasn’t motivated by a partnership with a fitness brand, a fashion show, or a television contract. It began with a stomach ulcer serious enough to necessitate emergency surgery, and it developed thanks to a daughter’s professional knowledge and a real change in the foods that a woman in her mid-seventies enjoys. In May 2025, Chloe celebrated her 77th birthday with balloons, flowers, and a birthday cake in the garden. The pictures she posted on Instagram depicted a woman who, according to her daughter, was her favorite person in the world.

Here, too, the larger context is important. Women‘s bodies have rarely been treated kindly on British television, and daytime hosts in particular have had to deal with criticism of their appearance for their entire careers. More than ten years ago, Finnigan mostly stopped using screens, and the change that ensued took place without the cameras observing. That is not insignificant. At seventy-seven and after two blood transfusions, it seems like the best course of action to make any changes at her own pace and on her own terms.
