When professional football players stop playing, they experience a certain type of invisibility. After fifteen years of being forced through pre-season camps, recovery pools, and two-a-day training sessions, the stadiums empty, the match reports cease, and the body is abruptly left on its own. That transition was always going to be difficult for Micah Richards, who retired from professional football in July 2019 after a career that saw him go from Manchester City’s youth academy to the right-back position of the England national team. He was designed with the game in mind. Premier League defenders are typically broad, strong, and physically intimidating. What that body would look like after the game released him was the question.

Richards played for Manchester City for more than ten years, making almost 180 league appearances, winning the FA Cup at Wembley, and winning the Premier League in that incredible 2011–12 season. He played in the 2012 Olympics, captained the team, and represented England thirteen times. His playing time was progressively diminished by injuries, especially chronic knee issues during his tenure at Aston Villa, until retirement became less of a choice and more of a necessity. He had only made 26 league appearances for Villa over the course of four seasons by the time he formally announced his retirement in 2019.

The transition to punditry came next, and it’s safe to say that Micah Richards found his second act much more easily than most former players do. He became one of the more watchable voices in football broadcasting thanks to his work on Sky Sports, BBC Sport, and CBS Sports. He is genuinely enthusiastic, occasionally hilarious, and willing to laugh at himself in a way that the industry doesn’t always reward. He co-hosts the Rest Is Football podcast, which gained a sizable fan base. In certain respects, his post-retirement prominence surpassed that of his playing career.

However, there are physical differences between training and broadcast life. Studio lights, long travel days, and the unique sedentary rhythm of television production take the place of the early mornings in Carrington, the conditioning work, and the metabolic demands of running at full speed for ninety minutes. Like many former athletes adjusting to this change, Richards might have had to actively reconsider how he was handling his fitness. The first few years following retirement are often described by former professional athletes as physically disorienting. The abrupt lack of structure leaves the body unsure of what to do.

Those who have followed Richards throughout his career as a pundit have observed what seems to be a noticeable shift in his body, with a trimmer, leaner appearance in contrast to his larger frame from his playing days. It’s still unclear exactly what routine or strategy he’s been using, and he hasn’t made any dramatic public remarks about a particular weight loss program. Nevertheless, there’s a feeling that the change isn’t coincidental. It appears thoughtful. Richards-caliber athletes typically have a good enough understanding of their bodies to recognize when something needs to be fixed.

It’s difficult to ignore how this reflects a larger trend among former Premier League players who enter the media. Rio Ferdinand, Gary Lineker, and Alan Shearer are examples of athletes who undergo a visible physical reckoning as they go from being elite athletes to public commentators. They may gain weight or lose it. Richards, who is currently 38 years old and nearing the middle of his broadcasting career rather than the beginning, appears to be falling short in that regard. It’s likely a mix of all three factors, whether it’s diet, organized exercise, or just the discipline that professional sports instill and never fully eradicate.

After football, Micah Richards has undoubtedly created something truly durable. A career that ended quietly at Villa due to knee injuries and few appearances has given way to a presence that appears to be much healthier than the challenging final years at Bodymoor Heath, as well as more settled and self-assured.
