Midge Ure Illness: The Health Scare That Forced the Ultravox Legend Off the Road

A certain generation of musicians reluctantly make a specific type of announcement that is succinct, cautious, requests privacy, and noticeably lacking in medical information. Midge Ure shared one of those on his website in August 2025. During a routine examination, the doctors had discovered something. It needed to be treated immediately. It would be necessary to postpone the tour, which would take place in Australia, New Zealand, the US, and Europe. He apologized for the disturbance. He expressed gratitude to his followers. He concealed his illness. The statement was written by a man who had experienced enough life events to know exactly what should and shouldn’t be said.

In the months that followed, it became clear from reports and social media posts that Ure had been diagnosed with Small Fiber Neuropathy, a disorder that affects the body’s network of tiny nerve fibers and usually results in chronic pain, exhaustion, and a general feeling that the body isn’t working properly. Although most people don’t know the name of the condition, those who have it describe it as exhausting in a difficult-to-quantify way. The ramifications are not just health-related for a touring musician who has performed live since the early 1970s. For someone like Ure, the stage, the road, and the live performance aren’t optional extras. The real work is done there.

Born James Ure in Cambuslang, on the outskirts of Glasgow, he is 72 years old. Since the beginning of his first Glasgow band in 1969, he has performed under the phonetic flip of Jim, Midge. Slik, a brief stint with Thin Lizzy filling in for a missing guitarist during a US tour, Rich Kids with former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, Visage, and Ultravox—the band whose 1980 single “Vienna” spent four weeks at number two in the UK charts and became one of the decade’s defining sounds—were all part of the subsequent career. None of that was constructed without a great deal of physical stamina. Even if you’re young and in good health, touring is a demanding business.

Ure is still frequently followed by the Band Aid chapter, and for good reason. Together with Bob Geldof, he co-wrote and co-produced “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in 1984. The song’s first UK release sold 3.7 million copies, making it the second-highest-selling single in UK chart history. A public profile that could have existed quite comfortably on the strength of Ultravox alone was given additional dimensions by the organization of Live Aid and later Live 8 with Geldof. It’s important to keep in mind that this man produced records for other artists while also overseeing the membership of Ultravox, Visage, and Thin Lizzy in the early 1980s. Maybe it was inevitable that the health system would eventually catch up.

The update was cautiously optimistic by February 2026. Ure wrote on social media that he was “looking forward to getting back on stage with my Band Electronica in a few months after my unscheduled break.” The phrase “unscheduled break” was used to describe what had obviously been a disruptive and uncomfortable time, and it was soft and almost purposefully downplayed. His planned 2026 tour, A Man of Two Worlds, which bills itself as a unique and intimate concert experience fusing album favorites with cinematic instrumentals, was confirmed to proceed. The May 2026 opening night at Bath’s Forum has returned to the diary.

A musician from this generation, one of the few who truly made the 1980s sound like they did, quietly managing a nerve condition while attempting to keep a tour schedule together makes it difficult not to feel something. The diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy lacks a definitive conclusion. It’s the kind of thing you learn to cope with instead of deal with. The fact that Ure seems to be doing just that—going back to the stage instead of permanently leaving it—says something about how working musicians of his generation typically feel about performing. It’s not a choice. They simply do it.
