A specific type of public scrutiny follows women into their darkest hours. For months, Erika Kirk, a widow, mother of two, and CEO of one of the most talked-about conservative organizations in America, has been under constant scrutiny. People found time to discuss her body despite the grief, the public appearances, the political burden she now bears, and the never-ending comment sections. They did, of course.

Since Erika Kirk’s profile blew up after her husband, Charlie Kirk, passed away, the discussion surrounding her weight gain has been raging on social media sites, Facebook groups, Reddit threads, and Threads posts. It’s worth taking a step back and posing the straightforward question, “Why exactly is this what people are fixating on?” She is managing a large organization, raising children, and dealing with the loss of a spouse. And yet, here we are.

Long before Charlie Kirk’s murder put Erika Kirk in a different kind of spotlight, she was already establishing a life in the public eye. She participated in the Miss USA pageant the year after winning Miss Arizona in 2011. She was pictured wearing less makeup and a more straightforward style back then, giving her a polished yet approachable appearance.

For example, she was seen sipping a drink in a casual Instagram photo with the caption, “not one bother was given that day.” Now that you know what happened later, those older pictures have an almost poignant quality. By most accounts, she was a woman trying to get her bearings.

Her appearance has changed significantly over the years, and it’s not just due to her weight. The term “Mar-a-Lago face,” which has been used by some online commentators to characterize the full-glam look adopted by several women in and around Trump’s political circle, refers to her long, blond hair and significantly heavier makeup.

Fuller lips, dramatic lashes, darker eyeshadow, and foundation fit for a camera. Erika hasn’t made any public comments about whether or not she has had any cosmetic surgery, and it’s important to remember that conjecture without proof is just conjecture. Her changing appearance might just be the consequence of a woman taking on a much more significant public role and changing how she presents herself. People can be affected in that way by public life.

The commentary on weight gain, which has ranged from slightly impolite to truly cruel, is less ambiguous. “Man, Erika Kirk sure did gain some weight!” was the title of a Threads post from earlier this year. This type of comment reveals nothing about Erika Kirk and tells you everything about the person who wrote it. Watching all of this unfold gives the impression that some parts of the internet view a woman’s evolving body as a type of public property that should be evaluated, discussed, and decided. To her credit, Erika hasn’t actively participated in any of it.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that the same individuals who are criticizing her appearance are also discussing strength, resiliency, and the burden of grief in other contexts. Both of these things are true. Gaining weight and carrying actual weight loss are not mutually exclusive. Stress causes bodily changes. A person’s metabolism can be altered by sleep deprivation alone. It is nearly perplexing that anyone would expect her to look exactly like she did at a beauty pageant ten years ago, when you take into account grief, additional professional responsibilities, two children, frequent travel, and the unrelenting pressure of public life.

Earlier this year, she shared a photo on Instagram with the caption, “To carry weight when the world tells you to run.” to use rough hands and a soft heart to create something timeless.” It’s unclear if that was a reference to her political obligations, her emotional burden, or something more intimate. However, there was a reason it landed. It’s a reminder that a complete human is beneath all the commentary, and it has a rawness to it that her more polished public appearances don’t always show.

After her parents divorced when she was a young child, Erika Kirk witnessed her mother juggle being a parent, a provider, and a businesswoman. She has addressed that head-on, admitting that witnessing her mother bear so much influenced her own perspectives on marriage and family. She is now being asked to carry something similar in an odd turn of events. Managing Turning Point USA, grieving in public, being a mother, and having strangers comment on her appearance on the internet. Her body has very little to do with the weight she is carrying.

In the end, the entire discussion reveals less about Erika Kirk and more about the unachievable expectations placed on women who appear at the wrong time, in the wrong way, for completely uncontrollable reasons. She didn’t decide to use her loss to become well-known. And yet, here she is, having her waistline and foundation coverage assessed while constructing something from what’s left. Even if the comment sections won’t, it’s worth taking a moment to consider that.
